The weirdness of actor Nicolas Cage and also the weirdness of science-fiction author Philip K. Dick seem as being a natural fit. The premise, taken coming from a short story by Dick, is a good one: A mediocre Las Vegas magician named Chris Johnson (Cage) is able to see in the future--but only about two minutes with the most. Just enough to pull off his act and to generate some cash at the gambling tables, so very long as he's discreet. Unfortunately, he has not been discreet enough; a government agent (Julianne Moore) has sussed out his precognitive talent and wants to utilize him to find terrorists. But all Johnson likes you is an attractive young woman (Jessica Biel, The Illusionist) that he can see as part of his future--much further as part of his future than he's ever seen before. Next has flashes that time to your much, far better movie laptop or computer turned out to be. A sequence by which Johnson, clairvoyantly explores all of the different permutations of how he could approach his mystery woman is both funny and thought-provoking, and when Johnson avoids pursuers by knowing just the right moment to make a corner or duck his head, it's smart and suspenseful. Unfortunately, the terrorist part with the plot is utterly perfunctory and precognition is reduced to a action movie gimmick. Somewhere in there may be the kernel of your romantic comedy about precognition that's just waiting to be made. Cage gives a good if unsurprising performance, Moore is basically earning a paycheck, but Biel is unexpectedly good (and her part is considerably better-written than your usual romantic interest); her performance suggests a much better future than anyone probably have predicted. --Bret Fetzer
